battle over the Labour carcass

David Miliband, the former Foriegn Secretary, has thrown his hate in the ring for the Labour parties top job with a rather lengthy speech. In a truly oxbridge move he has called on all candidates for the leadership to refrain from a negative campaign.

The country will not be looking at us carefully in the next few months, but they will notice us; they will be quietly judging our character; they will not follow the details of what we say but they will notice how we behave.

So this campaign needs to be a credit to the party. I propose to run my campaign in the following ways, to bring credit to the party: there will be no negative briefing about other candidates; it’s not my way and I won’t be starting now; we will tackle unattributable briefing through my named spokeswoman Lisa Tremble.

It will be interesting to see if a party that is still healing from wounds of an electoral defeat can manage to avoid a bloody around of self flagellation.
